A NOTE FROM ALICE - A WORD FROM OUR PRESIDENT
They tell me it's been a long hot summer. I'm writing the column this month because Marijo has resigned. She has been having health problems for awhile now. I'm sure I speak for everyone - "take it easy, Marijo, and get better soon". So, I have you in my clutches until the end of the year.

NIGHT PROGRAMS
September
Hostesses: Carolyn N. and Pat A.
Program: Nancy has designed a wonderful Orts container as our September project. It is a round foldable ort container using the inner ring of a 3 inch wooden embroidery hoop. Members will need to purchase their own hoop and bring it to the meeting along with their usual stitching supplies.

October
Hostesses: Carol J., Pat P., and Ruth L.
Program: The planned project for October is being designed and could be either a waxer case and/or thread ring tag. It's always nice to have a surprise.
REMINDER
Some of our members are allergic to or sensitive to perfumes, aftershaves, and other scents. Our EGA meetings will be perfume/aftershave/scent-free out of consideration for those who have sensitivities.
OUTREACH -HABITAT FOR HUMANITY SAMPLERS
Each time a new sampler is brought to the Habitat for Humanity, there are oohs and aahs and much thanks. Each year about 20 new houses are dedicated and we have been able to provide a sampler for each one. Currently, we have enough to finish this year and start next year but spring and summer are busy times for Habitat dedications and we will need most of our samplers at that time. Marijo and Margie do the work of stitching the names and framing these, but they need to have the samplers ahead of time so they can get them done on time. Each one takes only about an evening to stitch and would be an excellent way to watch the many games of football this fall. Consider making one or two so that we will continue with this worthwhile project.
WORKSHOPS
Casalquidi is an Italian form of embroidery originated in the nineteenth century. It is characterized by - depending on your point of view - Roman columns or fancy worms, pulled work, and built-in flowers. The resulting product appears quite complex and daunting to do, yet it is actually comprised of layers of simple familiar stitches.
At the August Stitch-In, Dick H. taught a workshop based on this form of embroidery. We had fun learning how simple stitches make such a delightful result. We thank Dick for all his work preparing his detailed demonstrations. Look for these beautiful white work Altoid tins displayed at our fall meetings.
NEWS YOU CAN USE
ELECTIONS, ELECTIONS, ELECTIONS
For the coming year, we need nominations for President, Vice-President, Region Representative, and Treasurer. The Nominating Committee members are Kelly L., Yvonna H., and Alice R. Please contact any of them if you'd like to be considered for one of the open positions.
CHRISTMAS PARTY
On December 2, we will once again return to the Radisson Hotel on Ann Street. A cash bar will be available at 6 PM, at 6:15 PM the Annual Meeting with the election of officers will take place, and dinner will start at 6:30 PM. The evening will conclude at 9:30 PM. The committee is hard at work planning fun and surprises. If you plan on participating in the ornament exchange, you will want to start deciding on what pattern you will want to do. We will again collect mittens, hats, and scarves for poor children. The menu choices are listed on the reservation sheet at the end of this newsletter. Please have your reservation into Alice Rufener by November 1.
EGA LEARNING OPPORTUNITIES
CORRESPONDENCE COURSES
Our National offers a wide variety of high quality courses that allow members to take intensive learning in a specialized area. After completing the course, you will be able to submit your work to the national teacher and receive a valuable critique. The listing of these courses may be seen in Needle Arts or on the web at www.egausa.org
There are four ways to take these courses:
1. Form an interest group of about 10 members here to share the costs and appoint one person to serve as coordinator.
2. For those classes with only one or two local members interested, the Great Lakes Region serves as coordinator for a number of classes each year. The list for 2011 may be found at the end of this newsletter. You must register by November and you will receive your materials sometime in January.
3. The website sponsors two new classes each month.
4. Each edition of Needle Arts has class specials.

U.S. NEEDLEWORK DESIGNERS BLOGS
Have you ever wanted to know what goes on in the minds of those folks who create the beautiful designs we covet so much? Nancy Backus has shared this list of the personal blogs of some of the top needlework designers in the United States. You may or may not gain more insight into the design process, however you may find you like the people behind the designs as much as the designs.

In its continuing mission to stimulate the appreciation of embroidery and to advance the highest standards of excellence in the practice of embroidery, EGA offers many educational opportunities through its Correspondence Courses. Chapters are not able to offer every course that would meet all the interests of every member of their group. To that end, the GLR underwrites the cost of a selected group of classes each year that will allow chapter members to pursue their interests without having to form a group from their home chapter. The GLR CC Coordinator serves as the liaison between the class participants and the designers/teachers. You will not have a local group leader and you will be stitching on your own.
Many exciting new classes are being offered for 2011 as well as some outstanding perennials. Many techniques and all skill levels are represented. For details regarding course content and the approximate cost of supplies, please refer to the Correspondence Course section of the Education Catalog that is available online at the EGA website,
www.egausa.org.
Registration deadline is November 1, 2010. Send the registration form below to the GLR CC Coordinator who will order and distribute instruction materials and remind you of deadlines to submit your work for evaluation. The deadline to submit pieces for evaluations is Oct. 15, 2011. The cost includes the course fee, instruction materials and postage with delivery confirmation. You will receive your manuals in late January or early February 2011. You are responsible for purchasing your supplies. Supply sources are provided with each course. If you have any questions, please call me at 920-469-1799 or email me at
