Notes from the President’s Desk

Good Morning!

I was recently organizing some framed pieces, and came across a sampler that had been in my husband’s grandmother’s home. It is unsigned, undated, and yet someone took the time to stitch this simple little sampler. There isn’t anything about this sampler that would help identify the stitcher, or even the time in which it might have been stitched.

If many of you enjoy stitching samplers as much as I do, then perhaps you are one who does reproduction samplers. If so, then you stitch the sampler with someone else’s name. But what about your own name? How will anyone be able to tell who really stitched the sampler?

Several times on Antiques Roadshow I have seen lovely samplers being appraised. Some of them could be identified by the stitcher and the year in which they were stitched, but at other times, there was nothing to help the appraiser. The curious thing about the unsigned samplers is that they are no less valuable, but how much more exciting it would have been for the family if they had known more about the stitcher.

In a conversation not too long ago, it was asked about whether, when you are doing a reproduction of a sampler, if you signed the name of the original stitcher, or your own name. I have no idea which is more correct, but I believe the general consensus was that you sign the original stitcher’s name, and then “tuck” your own name in somewhere on the piece.

On some pieces, I have put “working notes” in a sheet protector and attached that to the back of the piece. This gives my future relatives knowledge about what was going on when I was stitching the piece.

Like any artist, I feel it is important to sign a piece of work. Future generations will then have some way of identifying which of their ancestors was responsible for a particular item. Also, it’s a way of letting others know how proud I am of the work I’ve done.

Happy Stitching!
   Carolyn

JUNE 2012

NOTES FROM THE PRESIDENT'S DESK
Good Morning!
It’s lovely this morning, and I’m enjoying the sunshine! It is refreshing to open windows, pick up some stitching and just listen to nature’s story.
Speaking of stories, I am an avid reader, and although I have favorite authors and genre, I will read almost everything from novels to a history on the space age. The problem I have is one many of us have…read or stitch?!
The new technology allows us to listen to a book AND stitch. Don’t you love multi-tasking?!! When I was driving to and from work, I would listen to a book on tape…my car is old, and I enjoyed quite a few books that I would not have been able to “read” otherwise. Now that I am retired, I haven’t listened to a book; preferring instead to have the book in hand. When I’m reading, I’m not able to stitch or watch television. However, I don’t get as much stitching done when I’m really into a good book.
Until now I hadn’t thought about rethinking the use of audio books. My life got busier than I expected it would after I retired, and I didn’t even think about using audio books. With the advent of Kindle, iPad, and various other devices, it looks like I’ll be making a visit to the various websites for books to “borrow” to “read”.
It’s wonderful that technology makes things in my life more enjoyable.
Now I can read AND stitch! Hope you find a way to “multi-task” sometime soon!
Happy Stitching!
Carolyn

APRIL 2012

Notes from the President's Desk
Happy Spring Stitchers!
Recently most all conversations are about the weather! Yes, it is wonderful! Yes, it is way toooooo soon for 80 degree weather, and yes, we know Mother Nature can be quite fickle! I am so happy to be able to start wearing the lighter, brighter colors of spring! The change makes a big difference in many areas.
Do you find that your stitching is seasonal? It must be something like going without sunshine for too long. I like to work on a variety of pieces and have noticed that lately that the pieces of stitching I’m working on are lighter and brighter. During the winter months, I tend to stitch projects that have darker colors. Samplers, some holiday items, and small pictures are all a bit more drab. Not so with the last item I worked on; the small sampler is being done with brighter, more cheerful colors.
As hot as it has been these past few weeks, I’m wondering what July and August will be like. I am sure that my stitching will take a different turn…perhaps I’ll work on something smaller, or continue working on an assortment of pieces in the comfort of air conditioning!
Have a great time stitching…no matter what you are working on!
Carolyn

MARCH 2012

NOTES FROM THE PRESIDENT'S DESK
Greetings!
It looks like winter is in its last gasp! Thank goodness! I’m ready for warmer weather, opening windows, and getting the yard ready for planting. All that said, we really have had a mild winter, but it seems to have gone on long enough!
The approach of spring gets me to thinking of “lighter” things to stitch. The array of colors that are available is amazing! We aren’t talking just plain colors, we are talking schoolhouse red, lipstick, holly berry, azalea, and about a dozen other shades in the red family. Then there are the shades of yellow, blue and green, and all the variations contained in those color families. That doesn’t even take into account the over-dyed threads! Think of those days when we had just DMC, Anchor or JP Coates! It’s overwhelming at times what the industry has provided for stitchers.
Have you tried a new color? A new thread? An over-dyed? A silk? There are so many wonderful fibers to work with; lots of new projects! Like planting new flowers, experiment with something new in your stitching.
I think I’m going to put some purple and yellow together and see what “springs” from my needle!
Until next month,
Happy Stitching!
Carolyn

New GCC - Taming the Stash Monster
Taught by Laura Smith
Is the Stash Monster taking over your closet, your room, or even your house? Do you feel stalled by a box full of UFO’s (UnFinished Objects) and a stash of beautiful projects, threads, canvases, fabrics, beads, and more? This course can help you get your stash under control. First, you’ll determine your preferences so you can decide what YOU want to keep in your stash and what you can remove. Three ways of clearing a stash are offered, and you can decide which to employ based on how much stash you need to remove. Resources are provided for donating or selling eliminated items. You’ll learn the requirements for archival storage, ways to prevent or solve stash problems such as insects, mildew, and fading. An inventory system will keep you from buying a second or third time expensive books, projects, canvases, or threads that you already have. This course will make your stash work more effectively for you!

FEBRUARY 2012

UPDATE - MORNING MEETING OF FRIDAY, FEB 24, CANCELLED DUE TO INCLEMENT WEATHER

NOTES FROM THE PRESIDENT'S DESK
Greetings!
We are off to a great start! Lots of new things are going on in our chapter! I’m very excited about both of the projects we are beginning.
Have you ever noticed how often you start something? That would account for the number of UFOs in our individual stashes! I am guilty of “start-i-tis”! I want to try everything, or stitch something exciting, or just get into something new.
How about the flip side? How do you feel when you finish something? I recently finished a project started in May 2011. What a sense of accomplishment! It is a fairly large piece, and many of you have seen it. You have watched my deal with my frustration over this project. At one point I actually considered giving up on stitching altogether, selling everything, and taking up a whole new sport!
Now that it is stitched and ready to go to the framers, it is time to get out something else. I have to admit my next project is going to be something smaller. That’s the lovely part of stitching, there are so many choices. I’ll spread out my UFOs and see which one tweaks my interest, or maybe go into the stash, and randomly pick something. It is exciting to start a new project and a real sense of achievement when it’s finished. Think I’ll go dig in the stash and see what looks interesting!
Until next month,
Happy Stitching!
Carolyn

NOTES FROM THE PRESIDENT'S DESK
Greetings!
Welcome to 2012! How excited are you about the New Year? An analogy I recently heard says it all: a new year is a clean piece of paper. There isn’t anything written on the page and it’s ready to be filled with all the possibilities that present themselves.
We had a busy 2011, and had a great many accomplishments. I’m looking forward to all the exciting things that are being planned for the New Year. The possibilities are endless! It’s going to be a wonderful year!
